Finding the right person

The process of finding a sperm donor can be as short or as long as one wants. Ben and Eliza could do everything from giving some preferences, or actually picking a specific person. The couple decided to go for the first option since the pair of them didn’t really have anyone in specific in mind.

Together they picked out their preferred donor traits and while Ben wanted to send the application together, Eliza had already done it when Ben was at work one day. Ben found this somewhat strange but didn't think too much of it. He just felt excited about the prospect of finally becoming a father.

The couple had to wait a couple of weeks to finally get some news back from their application. Ben was actually the most surprised by this, as the doctor had told him it would usually only take a couple of days. Eliza told him to be patient. Perhaps there were a lot of applications in or something.

Eliza took the responsibility of staying in contact with the sperm bank, so she was the only person Ben was able to ask why it was taking so long. Eliza assured him that everything was going well and he had no need to worry. Ben was becoming anxious about the whole prospect but decided to trust Eliza.

A few weeks later, the sperm donor was selected for them and the couple was booked for an appointment. Ben was very eager to see how the donor looked but the sperm bank employee was not able to show them. All they could tell the couple were his features and she knew that they had confirmed them to be accurate.

It wasn’t uncommon for donors to want to keep their identities a secret. And that is apparently what Ben and Eliza’s doner had chosen to do. Ben wasn’t sure what to think of this, but Eliza assured him that they had listed out all the features they wanted to their preferences and that it would be fine.
